Israel waging war of nerves against Iran
Israel's president Shimon Peres hinted in an interview on Sunday that his country may carry out a military attack against Iran. The backdrop for this is an International Atomic Energy Agency report expected for Tuesday which Israel expects to provide proof of an Iranian nuclear weapons programme. The liberal daily Corriere del Ticino does not, however, anticipate a military conflict: "With its mobilisation for a war that is more a battle of nerves than a military conflict against the Iranian regime, Israel is pursuing different goals. It wants to convince the world of the threat Iran poses so that more pressure is put on Tehran and harsher sanctions imposed. Moreover the threat is supposed to be a final double warning shot: on the one hand to Iran to induce it to renounce its nuclear programme (which is rather unrealistic) and on the other to those countries that are providing the Iranian nuclear programme with materials, including China."
