Conflict between Ukraine and EU insoluble
The Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Tuesday refuted German President Christian Wulff's criticism of the sentence handed down to opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko. During a meeting with his Polish and German counterparts in the Polish city of Wrocław he explained that he had no influence on the decisions of an independent court. The left-liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza suspects the situation will escalate: "A conflict or even disaster is now in the offing. From December 7 to 9 the party conference of the European People's Party, which has the majority in the European Parliament and the EU institutions, is taking place in Marseilles. The group will pass a harsh resolution on the Tymoshenko affair because Tymoshenko's party the All-Ukrainian Union 'Fatherland' is associated with the EPP. After such a resolution has been passed there will no longer be any chance at all to conduct objective talks with the Ukrainian government about the leader of the Ukrainian opposition or Ukraine's drawing closer to the EU."
