Iranian embassy occupiers exacerbate conflict

Iranian students stormed the British embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, occupying it for roughly two hours. Several days previously the British government had stepped up sanctions against Iran in the conflict over Iran's nuclear programme. The turmoil will only escalate the conflict between Iran and the West, writes the left-liberal daily Népszabadság: "There have been considerable tensions between Iran and the West ever since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Things came to a head back then with the occupation of the US embassy in Tehran, when the embassy staff was held hostage for 444 days. The current circumstances are strangely similar to those back then. The cooled relations between the West and Iran have gradually deteriorated, especially since the report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on November 9. It suspects Iran of building a nuclear bomb, which the Iranians deny. Iran's attitude is similar to that of Israel. The Jewish state hasn't revealed whether it possesses nuclear weapons or not. At the same time it does everything it can to deter potential attacks with the threat of nuclear retaliation."
