Joschka Fischer sees Iran on the road to war
After the storming of the British embassy in Tehran, the British government has withdrawn all of its diplomats and demanded the closure of the Iranian embassy in London. Germany's ex-foreign minister Joschka Fischer sees war clouds gathering over Iran in the liberal daily Público: "An Iran with nuclear weapons or just a political decision in favour of nuclear armament would radically alter the strategic balance in the Middle East. ... Above all it's the Gulf States, including Saudi Arabia, that feel menaced, even more so than Israel. European security would also change dramatically with a nuclear-powered Iran equipped with warheads and missiles. All negotiation attempts have come to nothing, while Iran continues to enrich its uranium while seeking to improve its technology. ... War or a nuclear Iran? It seems the situation in the Middle East will focus on this unsatisfying alternative in the years to come unless we reach a solution - or at least a stopgap one - through diplomatic means."
