Italy must investigate Mafia's capital flows

After a search that went on for more than 15 years the Italian police arrested the Mafia boss Michele Zagaria on Wednesday. Zagaria, 53, is the boss of the Casalesi clan, one of the Camorra groups. Roberto Saviano, author of the mafia bestseller Gomorrha, calls on the state to continue its investigations into illegal capital and the business sector: "Michele Zagaria was no Mafioso. He was a businessman. ... He played a key role in the shady dealings of the dairy company Parmalat. It controlled the cement business in the Emilia-Romagna region. He had a hand in all Italy's major retail chains. The state must focus on the Mafia's capital. The strategy of repression employed by the previous government was inadequate. The billions in assets amassed by the Mafia must be subjected to rigorous scrutiny. The enormous fortune the clan has stolen from civil society can - and must - be returned. This is the duty of the state."
