Movement in the party spectrum
Six of the seven members of the Swiss Federal Council have been re-elected, but in the run-up to the elections the power games of the Swiss parties have gathered momentum, writes the liberal daily Le Temps: "Relations are growing more difficult, but also clearer. That is certainly a good thing. The liberals' refusal to form an alliance with the conservatives was doubtless the first step in the slow emancipation of a strong but stubborn party. Will the liberals manage to regain their place, forge compromises and assume the leadership role they lost after prolonged dithering? In times of economic difficulty the status quo can either strengthen the system or destabilise it. The decision of those responsible for maintaining the status quo is defensible, but it demands a good few sacrifices from all the parties."
