Bulgaria not so badly off after all

According to a survey by opinion research institute Alpha Research, the year 2011 was the worst economically since 1997, when Bulgaria witnessed the collapse of its banking system, high inflation and food shortages. The Bulgarians are faring better than they are willing to admit, the opinion portal Svobodata counterposes: "The average salary of Bulgarians is around 30 percent higher than it was in 1997. Back then those who never stop complaining today earned the equivalent of around ten dollars a month. ... Given the economic apocalypse we are experiencing today Bulgaria is not doing so badly. It may be the poorest country in the EU but it is in a far better state than neighbouring Greece. In the past 22 years of transformation the wealth of Bulgarians has more or less tripled but they themselves don't perceive it that way. The fact that they are poorer than other Europeans makes them blind to their own prosperity."
