EU neglects border dispute

The foreign ministers of Croatia and Slovenia met on Tuesday in Brussels to discuss the border dispute between the two countries before a court of arbitration. In the proceedings the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Štefan Füle failed to present a list of legal experts to arbitrate the dispute as expected. The left-liberal daily Delo analyses this lapse: "This is above all because for the EU the arbitration court is completely unimportant right now. The delay, whether intentional or not, will also work to the advantage of both states, because Slovenia doesn't yet have an able government and the government in Croatia has only just begun its work. Yet the Commission's delay is nonetheless surprising: both states have so far adhered to the main stipulations of the agreement while the Commission hasn't even fulfilled its first and most important task. ... But this is no cause for panic: sooner or later the list will come. And the subsequent decision of both countries regarding the arbitrators will no doubt be more difficult than the coalition talks at home."
