Roma worthy representative for Bulgaria at ESC
In Bulgaria singer Sofi Marinova became the first representative of the Roma minority to win the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest on Wednesday. She will compete in Baku in May with her song Love Unlimited. Marinova's ethnic background will give her an edge in the international contest, writes the daily 24 Chasa: "There are many Roma in Europe who will vote for Sofi, just as they did with Marija Šerifović who won for Serbia in 2007. And despite the xenophobic rumblings of recent times there are enough democratically-minded Europeans who won't see Marinova's ethnic origins as a problem and will support her. We shouldn't forget that in musical and artistic circles the 'gypsy' is a symbol for talent and skill. And talent must be fostered, regardless of its ethnic background. Bulgaria will only progress when it realises its full potential. So let's keep our fingers crossed for Sofi Marinova. She will be a worthy representative for Bulgaria."
