Vatican relaxes stance on homosexuals

The president of the Pontifical Council for the Family Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia spoke out in favour of recognising civil rights for same-sex partners in the Vatican on Monday. A revolution, theologian Vito Mancuso writes in delight in the left-liberal daily La Repubblica: "Is this not the first time that a minister of the Vatican State has publicly and explicitly described homosexual couples as legal persons? I think so, and I can only welcome this statement as considerable progress given that the Holy See has always opposed the protection of homosexual couples even in civil law. ... This is a radical change of course compared to the unbending stance displayed so far. Particularly given that Pope Benedict XVI gave Rebecca Kadaga [the Ugandan parliamentary speaker] a public audience a few weeks ago, who advocates exceptionally harsh laws against homosexual partnerships."
