Marko Lehti on the lack of vision in Europe
Europe lacks vision and needs to redefine its relationship with the United States, peace and conflict researcher Marko Lehti of the University of Tampere writes in the daily Helsingin Sanomat: "On many important issues like climate policy Europe and the US have come closer together. … Outsiders often have difficulties seeing the European Union and the United States as separate global players. On the contrary, more and more people see the West as being led by the US. Now that the Lisbon Treaty has taken effect Europe must remember that foreign policy does not have to go in only one direction. Europe must define more clearly the West's interests with regard to the US. At present, unlike in the past it offers the rest of the world no vision for a better future. Europe is obviously concentrating too much on itself and has no clear concept of its role in the world."
