Good that Europe is paying attention
The Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta is due to give the EU Commission details about the impeachment proceedings against Traian Băsescu today in Brussels. The daily Adevărul is very relieved that Europe is paying attention to what is going on: "We have reached a deadlock that will be more difficult to get out of than we believe. It's not just that democracy is under attack (or how else to describe the situation given the flood of nonsensical emergency decrees and institutional changes without any regard for the rules of democracy?). The transitional state [in which the country has been since the impeachment proceedings began] will last until after the referendum or even after the elections. The main activity of the [left-liberal ruling alliance] USL continues to consist in occupying institutions and taking control of them. The [liberal-democratic] PDL also did this in its time. But now we have the whole West annoyed with us. It sees how immature democracy is in Romania. Because one thing's for sure: apart from all the commotion in our backyard we citizens haven't been particularly successful at defending democracy and the rule of law. Thank goodness for the 'foreigners'."
