Baltic media underrepresented in Brussels

The Lithuanian and Latvian media each have only one accredited journalist to represent them at the European Union in Brussels. This works to the detriment of the societies of both countries, notes the conservative monthly magazine Valstybė: "It would be naïve to compare ourselves with giants like Germany's ARD or Britain's BBC, which have 44 and 20 journalists in Brussels, respectively. But the situation is still rather astonishing when we compare ourselves with similar-sized European countries or even with non-EU countries. ... This effectively means that Lithuanian society is denied the opportunity to receive important information. And worse still is the fact that there is no one to confront top EU officials with Lithuania's problems. ... EU officials may well get the impression that Lithuania and Latvia are extremely provincial places where people aren't even aware that matters pertaining to their own welfare are decided not just in Vilnius, but also in Brussels."
