Greece and its immigrants

Peloponnesian strawberry producers have seen their production stop as striking immigrant field workers demand salary increases. The Greek government reacted by assuring the workers that the country would pursue a 'modern' and welcoming immigration policy. The daily denounces the hypocrisy of this position. "The acts of racism towards clandestine immigrants, who came to Greece for economic reasons, are a daily occurrence. The Greek authorities don't hesitate to use all the means at their disposal to dissuade these immigrants from staying in Greece. From the Athenian police station to the small village outposts, violence is repetitive and well-known. What modern immigration policy is it that they're talking about? Giving 22 euros per day to an immigrant for gathering strawberries that then sell for 3 euros per box, exploiting these immigrants, mistreating them because they come from elsewhere, is that modernity? Once again, we find ourselves at the end of an accusing finger. Even the High Commissioner for Refugees asks that refugee claimants aren't sent to Greece!"
