In favour of critical thinking

Historian Ivan Iltschev criticises Bulgary's education deficit in the weekly magazine Kultura, writing that "universities should teach young people to think critically and to express their views openly. Critical thinking brings society forward. Universities should also teach young people to dare to make mistakes. Because mistakes are also a guarantee of progress. Through mistakes you get onto the right path by leaving the wrong one behind. ... That's why I tell my students that I don't expect them to be experts in chronology. What's important is how to situate wars and other major events, and how they relate to human development and other political and cultural events. The university should take up arms against the massive and growing educational poverty of Bulgarian society."
