Protect Romanians in Serbia
Romania has called for more rights for the Romanian minority in Serbia and blocked the decision to accord Serbia EU candidate status on Tuesday. Laura Cernahoschi backs the initiative on web portal Voxpublica: "Far too often the Romanian minority has been the victim of discrimination, and far too seldom Romania has managed to offer it support - be it in Ukraine, Serbia or Hungary. … Yet this is about standard rights such as religious freedom, the right to use Latin characters or state support for the schools and churches of the minority. These standard rights are not guaranteed in our neighbouring country Serbia. We only need look at the current initiative aimed at introducing a Cyrillic alphabet for Wallachian [an Eastern Romance language]. … Nowadays minority rights are a European affair, not just a Romanian issue. The EU states must do their bit to ensure that Serbia meets European standards on this issue."
