Nuclear plant pull-out saves Bulgaria from bankruptcy
Bulgaria has decided not to go ahead with the construction of a Russian-type nuclear plant in the town of Belene on the Danube, the Bulgarian government declared on Monday. The business paper Kapital Daily is relieved: "The painful uncertainty over the Belene project that was fuelled for two years by the contradictory statements of the prime minister and his ministers is finally over. A clear and meaningful position has been agreed on. For Bulgarian citizens this means above all that they won't live in a bankrupt state. Because the construction of the Belene nuclear power plant would have cost Bulgaria at least ten billion euros. Together with the attendant state guarantees such a burden would have destroyed Bulgaria's stable credit rating and made the country the latest to join the group of bankrupt states. ... Seen this way, the government's decision is eminently reasonable."
