Independent publishers save media freedom
In a debate about media freedom in Bulgaria in the EU Parliament on Wednesday, EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes expressed concern about the situation of the media in the country. Prime Minister Boyko Borisov's government has the mass media firmly under its control, writes the web portal e-vestnik, placing its hopes in independent publications: "Authentic facts and opinions can withstand any propaganda. ... A wonderful example of this was the Samisdat [dissident publications system under Soviet rule] which broke through the communist propaganda machinery. This was and still is possible because there will always be people who prefer to live with the truth than with the intoxicating lies served up by propaganda. As long as such people exist, there will also be true media. They may be poor and live in the shadow of the media monopolies but they will succeed in preventing the hushing up of information by media moguls."
