Denmark needs to start thinking greener
Since the publishing of negative second-quarter economic indicators for Denmark on Wednesday - the country's gross domestic product for example dropped by 0.5 percent - politicians and economists have been vying with each other to present proposals for improving the situation. Economist Mads Lundby has suggested introducing a kind of planned economy driven by mega shopping centres. The social-liberal Tageszeitung is less than impressed with the idea: "You can just see it: first the entire country is plastered with gigantic shopping centres, one more monstrous than the other, until the last local retailer is choked out of existence. Then growth will really start up big time. … The real answer to Denmark's growth crisis is to think big and think green. Denmark should take advantage of the lead we already have in the green growth sector. Top political priority must be given to turning Denmark into a green laboratory, by all means of mega proportions, whereby we should focus not just on exporting good solutions but also making sure that our domestic economy is put on a stable footing."
