Scepticism about referendums on the EU treaty

In several EU member states there are calls for a referendum on the new EU treaty. Governments should resist these demands, the newspaper writes. "For one thing there is a lack of clear alternatives. Saying no to a new treaty won't be saying yes to another, better proposal... The EU grew from 15 to 27 members within a relatively short period, and now it needs new instruments to meet economic challenges, prevent climate change, fight crime and tackle foreign policy. Moreover, the new treaty already has a democratic foundation: it is largely based on the EU constitution approved by the majority of member states. Following the rejection of the French and the Dutch in 2005, the member states revised the text. This should be taken into account by those who accuse the EU leadership of ignoring the will of the people."
