The excesses of voyeuristic television
A Spanish man has been charged with killing his former girlfriend a few days after attempting to win her back by asking for her hand in marriage on a television show. She claimed he had been abusing her for months before they separated. He was nevertheless invited to take part in the show. "The decisive influence of the mass communication media must be counterbalanced by a much stronger sense of responsibility," argues the daily. "Television dictates many people's behaviour and a certain way of thinking. And programmes based on private lives, whether those of celebrities or ordinary people, regularly strain at the bounds of what is legally or morally acceptable ... This tragedy should prompt senior television officials to examine the content of some of their programmes."
