Italy is going through a political and judicial conflict
Clemente Mastella, Minister of Justice, resigned on January 16th. He explained that accusations angled at his wife in relation to a corruption scandal constitute an attempt to discredit him. For Massimo Gianni, this is the latest chapter in war being waged between politicians and magistrates. "Almost like Sophocles's Antigone who, in universal judicial culture, remains the unrivalled model of resistance to power ... Sandra Mastella [President of the Campanile regional council] represents a new symbol of resistance, somebody who pits political power against judicial power. The earthquake she experienced yesterday, along with her husband and the UDEUR [Centre-left Catholic party], is not a splendid Greek tragedy, but rather a bad Italian drama ... Politicians and magistrates, will never get out of this war if they do not lay down their arms."
