Bulgaria plans another pipeline
After the Burgas-Alexandroupoli oil pipeline, Bulgaria now is taking on an even bigger project: construction of the Burgas-Vlora Pipeline, which is to extend from the Black Sea via Macedonia to the Albanian coast of the Adriatic Sea. Ivan Dobrevski comments: "The question is not whether the oil and gas pipelines should cross Bulgarian territory, but how to ensure maximal benefit and minimal environmental damage, given Bulgaria's geography and Europe's need for energy. Because the reverse can happen. This balance can only be guaranteed by qualified state authorities and responsible behaviour in political, economic and ecological realms. Environmental protection must come first. But it does not look like adequate measures have been taken. If they have, the public has not been informed."
