The death of the serious press

Political scientist Ivan Krastev points to the devastating impact of the financial crisis on quality newspapers: "The tightening of corporate advertising budgets and the predominance of the Internet are all but killing off the big American print media. A couple of weeks ago the New York Times was forced to take out a loan against its new office building. The death of the serious press in the US, and not only the US, will change our concept of the public sphere. Perhaps it's because of my age, but I fear this change. Blogs cannot replace articles written by professionals. Surfing the net follows a different logic to leafing through the pages of a newspaper. The Internet space is more free, but also more chaotic and polarised. It produces activists, but not necessarily informed citizens."
