A thrifty cultural capital

The daily Postimees fears that Tallinn will be unable to raise the funds originally intended for its year as cultural capital in 2011: "Originally the city was to put up 4 million euros last year, but in the end the figure stood at just 2.7 million. Similarly, the state only gave 0.9 million euros, rather than the planned 2.8 million. Bearing in mind how much is being cut everywhere at the moment, it is highly unlikely that the city will be able to provide the 11.5 million euros it was supposed to come up with. The state will also fall short of the 8.9 million euros initially earmarked. Even the chairman of the selection committee, Robert Scott, stressed on a recent visit to Tallinn that in view of the current economic situation cuts in the cultural capital budget were unavoidable. That makes it all the more important for the city and the state to better coordinate their efforts, so that Tallinn will be a worthy cultural capital in 2011."
