No one trusts Hungary's economic politicians
The liberal daily Sme comments on the crisis programme of the reshuffled Hungarian cabinet which started governing the country last week: "One of the cornerstones of the programme presented by the new Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai is trust. The head of government speaks often of the need to restore trust in the world and among his own people. … But a glance at the composition of the new government suffices to see why there is such a lack of trust. The majority [of ministers] already served under the socialists who have ruled up to now. The new prime minister had also served in the cabinet of his predecessor Ferenc Gyurcsány since 2006. … These ministers bear the full responsibility for the gradual economic decline. … The first version of the economy package contains measures which Hungarian economists have been urging for years. But only few believe they can be implemented by a government which is mainly in the hands of ministers who until recently had advocated the opposite of the current government rhetoric."
