The Czechs must shed their prejudices against the Roma
After an arson attack on a house occupied by Roma in the Czech region of Northern Moravia, the German-language Prager Zeitung calls on Czechs to shed their prejudices against the Roma minority: "Attacks on Roma living in the Czech Republic are nothing new. Last November the situation in the northern Bohemian town of Litvínov resembled a civil war when right-wing extremists called for a 'cleansing' of a district largely inhabited by Roma. It was only a matter of time before a further case of racism made it into the headlines. It remains to be seen if the attack in Vitkov in which a two-year-old girl was very seriously burned can put an end to racism in the country. It's no coincidence that four out of five Roma have no faith in the legal system. Crucial for change is the attitude of citizens to the problem. And the majority of Czechs take a negative view of the Roma."
