Easing zero-promille limit is the civilised thing to do
The Czech transport minister is considering lifting the country's strict zero-promille blood alcohol limit for drivers, while the country's parliament is debating raising the speed limit on motorways from 130 to 160 km/h. The liberal daily Mladá Fronta Dnes welcomes the first move but firmly rejects the second: "Ceasing to harass drivers is a clear step towards a civilised Europe. The majority of states don't treat drivers like small children and impose a 0.5 promille blood alcohol limit. This is only reasonable, and the Czech Republic should do the same as quickly as possible. A speed limit of 160 km/h is something else altogether, however. Such speeds are manageable with a good car on a good section of motorway. ... The only question, however, is why 160? For kicks? ... An argument like that doesn't cut the mustard."
