Newspapers have a bright future

The daily Karjalainen is convinced that despite the acute media crisis, the Internet does not pose a threat to newspapers: "The interests of readers and those of newspapers are identical. Readers want more variety, progressiveness, attractiveness and background information from their newspapers. That's just what the newspapers want to give them, and one way of doing it is already at hand. The network. On the long term the Internet poses no menace at all to newspapers, because only few people have time or energy to sift out the most important information, to compare it and to assess which of the thousands of items are correct. Of course Internet papers are giving the printed press a good run for its money. That's why information posted on the Internet is continually presented in new and different ways to what you find in newspapers. While the Internet focuses on quick information, papers put more stock in providing depth and ample content. And if the short, quick news items are already being read on the Web, that means the papers can free up more space for detailed stories."
