US healthcare reform difficult to implement

US President Barack Obama has sought backing for his healthcare reform in a speech delivered before the two houses of Congress. But the daily Delo argues that a comprehensive reform is impossible because the pharmaceutical industry and the health insurance companies spent too much money on the US election campaign: "It's true that most surveys in recent years have shown that the majority of the US population wanted a reform that provides everyone with health insurance and … would have been prepared to pay higher taxes to this end … . But when Congress started to discuss the reform such solutions were never proposed. The advocates of health coverage for all who appeared uninvited at the Capitol were driven away by the police. It was not the people who made the decision on the reform, but their representatives, who were elected to the US Congress with funding from precisely those companies that are to blame for the current plight of the healthcare system."
