German court ruling a severe blow for Greece
On Wednesday of this week the German Federal Constitutional Court stopped the deportation of an Iraqi from Germany to Greece, basing its decision in part on the overcrowded state of Greek camps for asylum seekers. The daily Ta Nea comments: "The decision of Germany's Constitutional Court not to deport an illegal immigrant who had come to Germany by way of Greece is a severe blow for our country. ... The German judges have decided the Iraqi will not be deported to Greece because he would face here the prospect of remaining unregistered by the Greek authorities and going homeless. This is the second such decision taken by the Constitutional Court within a week. Last week it stopped the deportation of the former head of Siemens Hellas, Michalis Christoforakos [who is suspected of committing fraud], on the grounds that he would not receive a fair trial."
