Internet must remain free

Negotiations will continue in the European Parliament this week over the so-called Telecoms Package, which is meant to establish rules for Internet traffic. The daily Aftonbladet stresses the importance of users' rights: "Until now the major issue in the dispute [over the law] was that nobody may be 'suspended' from the Internet. But the negotiations must also guarantee neutrality in the Internet, which must remain open and free for all individuals. A provider must not be able to block certain sites. That would make the Internet no freer than cable television. ... Many reasons are invoked for curbing the freedom of the Internet: security, protection from terrorism, copyrights, pirated copies, crime. ... Basically however these dangers lurk behind every market in Europe. But no one would even think of fencing off the marketplaces just because of that. So take the Telekoms Package and adapt it to the consumers so that they can securely go about their shopping, whether on the Internet or in the marketplace."
