Iran must abandon dialogue of deaf ears
After the first round of negotiations with representatives from the five veto-wielding states in the UN Security Council and Germany in Geneva Iran has signalled its willingness to allow international inspectors to examine its new uranium enrichment plant in the coming weeks. The conservative daily El Correo is sceptical: "Iran's contradictory gestures in the days preceding the meeting are not conducive to the conclusion that the land of the ayatollahs will submit its atomic and nuclear programme to an inspection in return for support in the area of civilian use of nuclear energy in trade and security in the Middle East. Even if the meeting can be regarded as a conciliatory gesture on the part of the government of [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, the latter would have to make clear his desire to abandon the dialogue of deaf ears that has defined the numerous attempts at negotiations since 2005."
