Kindle could revolutionise the book market

Almost two years after it introduced its e-book reader Kindle onto the US market, the US online retailer Amazon.com has announced it now wants to market the product in Europe as well. The daily Kaleva takes the opportunity to write on the future of the book: "Only when the necessary technology is available can e-books really take off. Once that's happened, Finnish-language content must be accessible in sufficient quantity. ... At the same time it is to be hoped that this new market will not be too vulnerable to piracy. That would be fatal for writers, publishers and ultimately readers as well. What will become of the printed book? The electronic book will cause a dent in sales figures, but the traditional book will not disappear. There will always be demand for printed books, they're more than just text printed on scraps of paper. The emotional link to books is very strong. ... The normal book will prevail at least among the current generation of consumers."
