Catalonia struggles for self-determination
Twelve newspapers in the Spanish region of Catalonia - among them daily La Vanguardia - published a joint leading article on Thursday calling for Catalonia's new regional constitution, which defines the Catalan people as a nation, to be left intact. The Spanish Constitutional Court is expected to declare parts of the statute unconstitutional in the next few days: "There is concern in Catalonia, and all Spain should know about it. … People here are tired of the angry looks of those who see the Catalan identity (institutions, economic structure, language and cultural tradition) as a kind of manufacturing defect that prevents Spain from attaining its impossible dream of unity. … We hope that the Constitutional Court will consider the particular circumstances of this case in making its decision … : It is nothing other than an old European people's demand for more self-determination."
