Collapsing states serve as terrorist bases
Following the botched attack on a US aircraft at Christmas the US government has identified Yemen as a base for terrorists. The daily Expressen sees parallels with Afghanistan and Somalia: "The similarities are striking. They are weak, not to say collapsing states plagued by civil war, clan rule and poverty. All of them have pro-Western governments but state power is weakened and has no control over large parts of the territory. What's more, anti-Americanism is spreading like an epidemic and complicating the battle against al-Qaida."
