Bulgarians still live in the shadow of communism

For Bulgarians the most important date of the 20th century is September 9, 1944, the day the Red Army marched into Bulgaria. This is the result of a survey carried out by a popular television show. The daily Sega is not surprised: "You've got to be blind not to see that we still live with the consequences of the putsch of September 9. Even today the political debate is marked by the battle line between communism and anti-communism. Even today the economy is controlled by strong members of the secret police, and the underworld is also their product. Just a few months ago the top political office in the country went to a man who studied at the school for militiamen and was bodyguard to the former dictator and the last Bulgarian king. What other event of the last century resonates with such force 66 years later? Probably none."
