Scandal accelerates political progress

The temporary resignation of British Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson in the wake of a sex and finance scandal could lead to a quick transfer of policing and judiciary powers to the regional government, writes the daily The Irish Times: "Will the demands of logic and political self-preservation generate a deal between the Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Féin on the transfer of policing and justice powers from Westminster by an agreed date? ... In the maelstrom of personal disclosures in Northern Ireland, it appears that sources within these parties are saying that such a development cannot be ruled out. But the operation of normal political criteria should not be taken for granted in such a conflicted society. ... So far, Mr Robinson has appeared to be more interested in pandering to the party's extremist wing by publicly frustrating Sinn Féin. Changed political circumstances may, however, dictate a new approach. A stark choice faces Mr Robinson between agreeing to the transfer of powers or ending his political career. Are there grounds for some hope?"
