Iraq war violated international law

A fierce debate is underway in the Netherlands over the country's role in the Iraq war, which according to a recent report had no basis in international law. A disgrace, writes the liberal daily NRC Handelsblad: "This finding means a considerable loss of prestige for the Netherlands. The Hague traditionally pursues a strictly legal and ethical foreign policy, oriented on international organisations, human rights and treaties. ... But when the Netherlands is put under pressure by its Atlantic allies, law must bow to force all down the line. In 2002 when the foreign ministery was put in a situation where it had to justify the attack in Iraq, it made a mockery of international law."
