Hungary heading for dictatorship
Viktor Orbán, the chairman of the conservative Fidesz party, will presumably be Hungary's next head of government. In the run-up to the elections on April 11 the left-wing daily Népszava paints an unflattering picture of Orbán and his party: "Even as a young politician Viktor Orbán was sorely lacking in taste, good manners and tact. Even at that time he exuded aggressivity ... and his eyes reflected an overwhelming desire for power. ... When Orbán and Fidesz were in power [from 1998 to 2002] they set up a new party state, and they are now chomping at the bit to pick up where they left off. There's no need for an opposition because in Orbán's mind 'all this debate just splits the nation'. In any case the people have no idea what's good for them. Sound familiar? Yes, this is the maxim of the autocrat. ... Anyone who wants to govern without an opposition is undemocratic. ... In a nutshell, the system Orbán has in mind is called dictatorship."
