Investigative journalism in crisis

The Global Investigative Journalism Conference begins today, Thursday, in Geneva. The daily Le Temps upholds the importance of the genre, which finds itself in a two-fold crisis: "This type of journalism ... is in danger today, for numerous reasons. The media have been bled dry by the economic crisis and are hesitant to pay researchers who are expensive on the short term, quite apart from provoking legal headaches and unleashing pressure from all quarters. Added to that, at least in the West, the vocation is itself in a crisis: fewer and fewer journalists are attracted by such risky work. Nevertheless investigative journalism is a good investment on the medium and long term. It interests readers, listeners and viewers, and continues to play a crucial role in shaping public debate. And in this moment of doubt, one thing is certain: there's no lack of subjects to investigate!"
