Spain needs legislation on freedom of information
Prompted by International Press Freedom Day, celebrated on Monday, the conservative daily ABC calls for Spain to introduce a law that regulates access to information held by authorities: "In the case of Spain the day acquired a special significance because our country, together with Greece and other smaller members, was not among the 23 members of the European Union that already have laws regulating access to information and freedom of the press. ... The press freedom laws, despite all their limitations, have served in the more than 80 countries that have this type of legislation to make governments more efficient in working towards the common good. They have encouraged progress towards achieving open societies in which the state authorities cannot conceal data and information from citizens which without doubt belongs not to those who administrate but to those who are administrated."
