EU must stand up for the rights of homosexuals

Lithuania's first gay parade took place on Saturday in Vilnius, accompanied by massive police protection and counter demonstrations. The EU has to do more for the rights of homosexuals, writes the daily Politiken: "When intolerance starts making inroads in the EU the time has come for Brussels to act. The EU must demand that Lithuania rescind its discriminating laws, which are a disgrace to both Lithuania and the Union as a whole. In several former communist member countries the European community is running up against the same problem of intolerance. This is the legacy of the Soviet Union, where homosexuality was forbidden. Formerly oppressed groups have quickly attained freedoms, but for sexual minorities it's another thing altogether. We've seen the same thing in the other two Baltic states, as well as in Poland and Hungary."
