Bulgaria's secret service to examine judges
To put an end to the frequent cooperation between the judiciary and the mafia in Bulgaria Interior Minister Zvetan Zvetanov has called for the national security agency to carry out reliability checks on the country's judges in future. The daily Novinar welcomes this initiative: "The judges themselves realise that there is no alternative to judicial reform because they are literally living in the Dark Ages. Why are they so sensitive about their procedures being made transparent and their lives being scrutinised? This is a sign of their bad consciences. ... In the city they can hide but in small communities this isn't possible. People see who their friends are, who they drink coffee with, and talk about it covertly. Up to now that was all they did because they knew very well: a judge who sits at the table with mafia bosses will decide over life and death tomorrow. And no one wants to get on their bad side."
