Lithuania needs more respect for homosexuals
In the wake of a gay parade held in Vilnius, debate has once more flared up in Lithuania over the social position of gays and lesbians. The daily Lietuvos Rytas calls for more objectivity: "The parade got a lot of people all in a flap, tempers and hatred ran high. But instead of using coarse words or even weapons, we should take a calm look at things. A year ago there was a big fuss just because a few rainbow-coloured flags were waved around, now it's the same thing over a parade. Next it'll be the legalisation of same-sex marriages and later adoption. That's how it was in other countries, and Catholic Lithuania won't be able to stem the tide of events either. No one should believe our country is an isolated island or the land of Maria. ... Can we not respect someone even if we don't share their views? Of course we can!"
