Spanish government needs new allies
The Spanish parliament approved the plan for consolidating the budget by just one vote on Thursday. The daily Periódico de Catalunya calls on the government of Prime Minster José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero to campaign for a broader alliance: "The slim majority of just one vote allowing the government to pass the austerity measures highlighted the isolation of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in confronting this most difficult phase of readjustment. ... This makes it more important than ever that the government should build bridges to assure it the stable parliamentary majority necessary for approving the budgets of the next two financial years and silence those anxious for new elections."
