Romanian theatre association neglects new generation
The Romanian theatre association Uniter's annual awards for the best Romanian plays prompt young playwright Ruxandra Badea to criticise the association in an open letter for presenting too few contemporary plays. Petre Barbu, who won the prize in 2003, agrees with her criticism in the daily Adevărul: "The Uniter association prides itself on promoting creative freedom and the theatre movement, but in reality it doesn't spend a penny on contemporary dramatic advisers. If you don't have connections and you don't woo theatre directors or you're not the darling of an influential group, if you don't have the financial support of a sponsor then you may as well throw your play away. You don't stand a chance of seeing it on stage! (it's the same in all areas in Romania, so we can generalise here without worrying about making a mistake). ... Romanian theatre directors only 'look after' Shakespeare and Chekhov!"
