End of the border dispute means Croatia can join EU

By approving an EU arbitration agreement for resolving the border dispute with Croatia on Sunday the Slovenians have at the same time freed the way for Croatia's EU membership, writes the business paper Világgazdaság: "It's always good news when two neighbouring countries resolve a border dispute that has gone on for decades. … But the positive result of the Slovenian referendum is likely to have further consequences. … The hostile attitude towards Croatia seems to be visibly fading. … Remember that Ljubljana practically blocked Croatia's EU membership talks for months on end. For a long time slogans like 'The Croats must be stopped' or 'Croat membership - Never!' were commonplace in Slovenia. … The positive referendum result in Slovenia has decoupled the question of Croatia's EU membership from the border dispute for good. … Croatia's EU membership agreement could be signed as soon as next year during the Hungarian EU council presidency."
