Belgian problems endanger the EU project
The difficult political situation in Belgium after the elections could also have consequences for the European Union, writes the business paper Világgazdaság: "Belgium is not only the seat of most EU institutions, it has also long been a model for peaceably harmonising multifarious, often divergent interests. In this way it inevitably served as a model for European integration. If the Belgian example fails, the EU project itself could suffer badly. ... The situation in Belgium can be described as follows: something went seriously awry in the cohabitation between the Walloons and the Flemish in the past decades. The result is deep-seated mutual distrust and resentment. ... Should Belgium really split in two, it will above all happen for the above reasons. If Europe wants to learn from Belgium's example, it must not limit itself to fastidiously counting the members' payments and the EU's disbursements. It must also seek to bolster trust and ties between the countries."
