Royal wedding highlights the new status of women
The Swedish crown princess Victoria married her betrothed Daniel Westling on Saturday. As heiress to the throne, Victoria has a higher place in society than her husband. Women are socially on the up and up, writes the daily Svenska Dagbladet: "The fairy tale of Victoria and Daniel is a modern saga that reflects true developments: women are taking over. ... Since the turn of the millennium the post-industrial jobs are to be found in the service sector, where women fit in better than men. ... Better education is the ticket to the middle class, and in the US (as in Sweden) a majority of students are women. ... But particularly, the wish of parents-to-be for a daughter - not only in the West, but also now in South Korea, India and China - shows that the future belongs to women. The era of the first-born son is a thing of the past. The new role attributed to daughters cannot be put down to politics. The new economic era simply suits princesses better than princes."
